Anaesthesia during thoracic surgery has a significant impact on the cardiovascular system and on vital organs such as the lungs, kidneys, brain and heart. These impacts are caused by the complicated nature of the surgery, fluid therapy and the effects of medication.

Peter Juhl-Olsen's research focuses on the cardiovascular system and on optimising the function of individual organs - primarily by using ultrasound scans before, during and after surgery. He is also involved in several research projects centred on fluid therapy management, the effect of medication on circulation, and the development of new monitoring methods to assess the cardiovascular system.

"My research is important for any patient who undergoes a major surgical procedure, particularly heart, lung and vascular surgery, or who suffers from an acute respiratory or circulatory impairment," says Peter Juhl-Olsen and continues:

"I’m very excited about taking up the professorship and I believe it’ll bring much deserved focus on the importance of anaesthesiologic management of patients who are undergoing major surgery or who have become acutely ill. The goal is ultimately to develop better clinical care by tailoring therapy to the physiology of each individual patient.”
