My research interests centre on the biological functions of selenium and selenoproteins and their importance for cardiovascular and systemic physiology. I am particularly interested in how suboptimal selenium status affects endothelial function, vascular reactivity, nitric oxide signalling, oxidative stress and inflammation
A developing focus of my research is the role of selenium and selenoproteins in conditions associated with altered oxidative and inflammatory balance, including ageing, menopause, pregnancy and metabolic disease
My expertise combines vascular physiology, molecular biology and experimental models. I use wire myography, vascular reactivity and blood pressure measurements together with cell culture, PCR/qPCR, cloning, transfection, Western blotting and fluorescence microscopy. I also have extensive experience with mouse models, genotyping and phenotyping, and with developing and implementing experimental methods in cardiovascular and selenium research
